People often wonder what they can freeze and how long something can stay in the freezer before it goes bad. The Old Farmer’s Almanac has compiled a list to answer these questions:

  • Most cheeses can be frozen for up to 6 months. However, you should never freeze cottage cheese, cream cheese, fresh Mozzarella, feta cheese, goat cheese, Neufchatel, Parmesan, and any processed cheese that has been opened.
  • When it comes to dairy products, you can freeze butter for 9 months and margarine for 12. Ice cream and yogurt can be frozen for up to 1 to 2 months. Milk can be stored in the freezer for 3 months and cream for 4.
  • Many types of seafood can also be frozen. Shellfish can be frozen for 3 to 6 months, fatty fish for 2 to 3 months, and lean fish for up to 6 months.
Almost all fruit can be frozen for up to 12 months, except for avocados, bananas, citrus fruit, and fruit juices. These fruits can be frozen, but for a shorter period of time.
  • Most vegetables can be stored for anywhere for 6 to 12 months, except for tomatoes, which can only be frozen for up to 2 months.
  • Most meats can be frozen for a few months. Wild game lasts the longest in the freezer, lasting between 8 to 12 months. Processed meats such as lunch meat and sausage have a much shorter shelf life in the freezer at only 1 to 2 months.
  • Uncooked chicken can be frozen for up to 12 months.
