What is a Gas Pack?

A gas pack heating unit is also called a self-contained air conditioning and heating unit. By combining the two units into one, it takes up much less space. Plus, by combining cheap electric air with economically efficient natural gas, this unit is perfect for the penny-pinching home.

The Unit

A gas pack heating unit consists of air conditioning and heating components in one housing. The air conditioning portion is typically electrical while the heating portion can be either natural gas or electric, although it is not called a gas pack if both components are electric.

Installation

A gas pack can be installed on the ground outside the home or on the roof. Commercial and large buildings employ rooftop gas packs more than individual homes. Gas pack or self-contained units are ideal for modular or mobile homes where space is limited.

Modification

If you do not have natural gas in your home, you can modify the gas pack to use propane instead. Just purchase a liquid propane (LP) conversion kit. You can also modify the unit to accommodate square or round duct work.
